War is a time of heightened tension and focus. The songwriter, singer, and musician play an important role in the effort of society to face the challenge. What role did Music play in supporting the Canadian Navy’s role in the Battle of the Atlantic? Was it to inspire a sense of martial prowess? Was it to reinforce a love of home and country? What was the role of the musician in the navy? How were they used? Was music ‘recognized’ as importance by the Chiefs of Staff? Who were the musicians? The composers?

All popular music lyrics are messages. Music and song have always been in the arsenal of society to capture, retain, and convey historical, social and emotional messages.

There are many songs/lyrics from the World War II era that attest to the above statement. The White Cliffs of Dover, is perhaps one of the most well known songs of the era. It was a song that spoke to the yearning for a peaceful world and a return to family and community.

An interesting study would be to examine the lyrics of popular WWII songs and determine the 'messages' they carried. Another interesting enquiry would be the role that the military musician played in the boosting of morale in the armed forces.
